#86 How Artificial Intelligence will Change the World with Lasse Rouhiainen – Best-Selling Author and International Expert on Artificial Intelligence

Lasse Rouhiainen (1).jpg

Lasse Rouhiainen is a best-selling author and international expert on artificial intelligence, disruptive technologies, and digital marketing. Finnish in origin but based in Spain, Lasse focuses his work on investigating how companies and society, in general, can better adapt to, and benefit from, artificial intelligence. Lasse has given keynote presentations, seminars, and workshops in more than 16 countries around the world and holds frequent conferences at several universities internationally. He has also provided training to thousands of students and businesses through online e-learning courses.

In this episode, Lasse Rouhiainen explains how he started in the world of data. He wrote a book about how higher education will change due to advancing technologies. That’s when he realized how AI would have such a significant impact on everything we do. Even to this day, there is not enough information about the effects of artificial intelligence. In Lasse’s current book, Artificial Intelligence: 101 Things You Must Know Today About Our Future, he explains how we can better prepare for AI taking over varying industries. AI is the first technology that people have learned about in Hollywood movies. Elon Musk keeps telling us we should be worried about AI, now people are starting to get prepared. However, AI is not being taught in schools and universities – the information needs to be spread, especially in political elections.

Then, Lasse discusses the ethical implications of AI. Soon enough, algorithms will be determining the majority of our lives – we should know how these algorithms are being determined. AI is used in the prison system; algorithms are written to determine if a criminal will commit another crime after being released. These algorithms are incredibly biased and imperfect. Society is starting to think about writing algorithms correctly and ethically without any biases. We should involve a lot of different people when creating algorithms. For instance, algorithms are used to hire people. However, this can be a biased way to do things. Algorithms should not have control over all decisions; people need transparency behind the algorithms. Bias will come from the creators of the algorithms. Many times, the creators will only reflect a particular sector of society, so they tend to use their subconscious bias to create the algorithm.

In the US, people use AI as a tool to make money because they are very consumer-based. Big companies will do whatever they can to create as much value for their shareholders. In Europe, there are more meetings about how to utilize AI. It takes more time, but in the long run, it is much better because it will benefit their population. AI will be used as a tool to improve life, as opposed to a tool that will only generate benefits for big-name companies. Lasse says the most critical task companies need to do is using AI and analytics as fast as possible. They do not need to be experts; they need to gather the right data to improve people’s lives tremendously. Politicians should be speaking about data, artificial intelligence, and algorithms. Improve education and government can be solved by collecting data, learning from it, and making changes. Stay tuned to hear Lasse speak about AI in the education sector, the inspiration behind his many books, and Lasse answers the rapid-fire questions.
